SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The U.S. Interior Department has awarded more than $20 million to 44 water conservation projects in 11 Western states, including Utah, Nevada and California.
Utah’s six projects funded with the WaterSMART grants announced Wednesday are second only to California’s 10.
The Fremont Irrigation Co., Cub River Irrigation Co. and Weber Basin Water Conservancy District each were awarded $1.5 million to help with projects to improve efficiency by lining earthen, open canals or converting them to pipelines.
The Strawberry Highlight Canal Co. in Payson is receiving a pair of $300,000 grants and the Wellsville-Mendon Conservation District gets $183,000.
The Southern Nevada Water Authority in Las Vegas will receive a $300,000 grant toward a $3.3 million effort to expand its existing landscape rebate program providing incentives to convert grass to water-efficient landscaping.
