LOS ANGELES (AP) — A new report finds visitors to California beaches encountered mostly clean waters last year.
About 93 percent of beaches along the state’s coast that were tested for bacterial pollution last summer had good to excellent water quality.
The organization Heal the Bay on Thursday released its annual beach report card, which rated the water quality of 445 beaches in California. Because of back-to-back dry winters in Southern California, there was less runoff polluting the ocean.
Among the top 10 dirtiest beaches, four were in Los Angeles County. Testing found the worst beach was at Avalon on Santa Catalina Island.
The environmental group said it expects improvement once Avalon completes its upgrade of its corroded sewer system that has been blamed for the high pollution levels.
