SAN DIEGO (AP) — San Diego police say they killed a gunman in a shootout in Escondido and later found pipe bombs in his car.

U-T San Diego says a police surveillance team was tailing a known felon and planned to arrest him Wednesday night when the man realized he was being followed and tried to flee.

Police say he crashed his SUV into a wall in Escondido.

Escondido police Lt. Neal Griffin says the man then fired a shot at officers from a shotgun.

Police fired back, killing him. His name hasn’t been released. No officers were hurt.

Griffin says a bomb squad later found seven pipe bombs in the car along with a large amount of ammunition.
