NORCO, Calif. (AP) — Riverside County prison workers fear a death sentence for more than 100 feral cats that are being rounded up from the prison grounds and sent to a shelter.

The Riverside Press-Enterprise reports the warden at the California Rehabilitation Center in Norco said in a memo this week that the cats have become a health concern.

Prison officials say sending the cats to a shelter gives them a chance to be adopted, but prison workers worry they’ll be euthanized.

Prison workers have stopped bringing pet food to the 98-acre grounds and feeding the cats, along with raccoons and skunks on the prison grounds.

Prison spokesman Martin Alexi says the prison is responding to a directive from state officials, who received a complaint.
