Michael Terpin on Business Rockstars
Today on Business Rockstars, Ken Rutkowski talks with Michael Terpin, the author of Beyond Social Media and an expert in public relation. He is also the founder of SocialRadius, a social media marketing firm that has worked with artists like Will.i.am and TV shows like NBC’s I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!
Michael Terpin began SocialRadius in 2006 as one of the nation’s first social media marketing firms, following a successful career heading up Terpin Communications, a leading international high-tech PR agency he founded in 1990, where he launched some of the biggest success stories of the consumer Internet era, with clients including America Online, Earthlink, Jupiter Communications, The Motley Fool, Playboy.com and Xoom.com/NBCi.
Success stories at SocialRadius include the viral outreach for recording artist Will.i.am’s Yes We Can video during the Obama campaign (which won an Emmy, Webby and Clio Gold Lion), I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! on NBC, which opened at #1 in its timeslot, and the controversial Scarface School Play for Rockhard Films/Sharethrough, as well as social media event marketing for Live8, LiveEarth, the Green Inaugural Ball and the David Lynch Foundation.
Other clients have included Affinia Hotels, Bombay Sapphire, Participant Media (“The Cove”) and several divisions of Philips. SocialRadius is headquartered in Santa Monica, CA, with offices in Las Vegas, New York and San Francisco.
Terpin also founded Marketwire, one of the world’s largest and most technologically sophisticated company newswires. Originally known as Internet Wire, Marketwire was acquired in 2006 by Toronto-based media company, CCN Matthews, and is now owned by OMERS Capital Partners, the private equity arm of a $41 billion pension fund. Marketwire employs more than 200 people and has annual revenues of more than $100 million, with offices on four continents.
Michael has been a frequent speaker at leading technology and marketing conferences, including Ad:Tech, AlwaysOn, BlogWorld Expo, CES, Digital Hollywood, E3, ERA, ETRE, NAB, PhocusWright, PRSA, and many others. He has been profiled in two Inc. Magazine cover stories, a recent feature story in Entrepreneur, as well as PRWeek and O’Dwyer’s PR Report. Terpin is the only PR executive to be twice named to the Los Angeles Business Journal’s list of the most influential technology leaders. He was a finalist in the 2000 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
Terpin’s first book, Beyond Social Media, will be published in 2013. He has been published in numerous industry publications and blogs, serves as a contributing writer for CommPro and TechZulu, and he publishes Social Media World and the popular CES Party List. Terpin holds an MFA in Creative Writing from SUNY at Buffalo and degrees in Newspaper Journalism and English Literature from Syracuse University, where he serves as an advisor to its top ranked Newhouse School of Public Communications and was inducted into its prestigious Wall of Fame. Terpin is also an investor and advisor to many media and technology companies, including Ecomom, Launch.it, Liquipel, Stockr, Virurl, Walls360, YouMail and XFire.
