SANTA FE SPRINGS (CNS) – The Alondra Boulevard Bridge over the Santa Ana (5) Freeway in Santa Fe Springs has been closed in preparation for demolition work which will begin Friday.
Demolition will continue for six weekends on Friday and Saturday nights. Three weekends of demolition are scheduled for each half of the bridge, Maria Raptis of Caltrans said.
The freeway will be closed in one direction between Carmenita Road and Valley View Avenue each weekend through July, with the exception of July 5-6, Raptis said.
The work is part of a $110 million Santa Ana Freeway widening, for one additional lane and a carpool lane. The new bridge will be six lanes, two more than the previous bridge.
The 57-year-old bridge, a segment of Alondra Boulevard between Freeway Drive and Marquardt Avenue, was closed Monday. The route will remain closed until the new bridge is completed in 2014.
