Senate leader takes over with Brown, Newsom gone
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg is California’s acting governor, with the state’s two top chief executives out of state over the holiday weekend.
The Sacramento Democrat used the position Thursday night to issue an emergency proclamation for Mariposa County, which is suffering from the effects of the Rim Fire.
Steinberg’s temporary ascension happens to come while he is at odds with Gov. Jerry Brown over the governor’s plan to spend $315 million this year to shift thousands of inmates to private prisons and unused jail cells.
Brown is in Michigan through Labor Day at a gathering for the family of his wife, Anne Gust Brown.
Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office said Friday that he is vacationing with his family and is expected to return Sunday.
