LA County to shift 500 inmates to fire camp crews
LOS ANGELES (AP) — More than 500 inmates in Los Angeles County lockups will be shifted to firefighting camps in the area’s mountains.
The Los Angeles Times says the Board of Supervisors’ decision Tuesday is an effort to reduce crowding in jails and to keep serious offenders behind bars longer.
The state is under order to cut its prison population and the so-called realignment program has sent some felons to county jails, raising their populations and resulting in earlier releases.
The new action will send qualifying state inmates to five fire camps run by the county Fire Department and the state prison system.
