LOS ANGELES (AP) — California Republicans will spend the weekend trying to figure out how to become more competitive in a state dominated by Democrats.

Delegates plan to meet in Anaheim for an annual convention with the state party at a low point. Democrats hold every statewide elected office, dominate both chambers in the Legislature and hold a commanding 2.7 million-voter edge in statewide registration.

GOP leaders are making plans to lure new voters to the party, especially Hispanics and Asians.

The Republican statewide registration has dipped below 29 percent.

There are some bright spots. The party has managed to retire a lingering debt, and cherry farmer Andy Vidak captured a state Senate district long controlled by Democrats in a special election last summer.

National Committee member Shawn Steel calls Vidak’s win “a landmark.”
