OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Dozens of truck drivers and their supporters are picketing outside the Port of Oakland over an impending deadline to upgrade their trucks and what they say are long wait times at the port.

Oakland police were keeping the protesters away from the port’s entrance on Wednesday morning, and port officials said work had not been disrupted.

The protest was organized by a group of San Francisco Bay Area truckers, who are demanding funding to offset the costs of truck upgrades required beginning in January to meet clean-air standards set by the state.

They also want a congestion fee for waits greater than two hours.

Port spokesman Robert Bernardo says the port does not control the drivers’ wages, but has asked trucking companies and terminal operators to address their concerns.
