Mixed Martial Arts Veteran Dies at Age 41
WEST COVINA (CNS) – A former mixed martial arts fighter and Jiu-Jitsu instructor who competed in Long Beach Sunday died at a hospital in West Covina today, police said.
Joe Camacho, 41, of Ontario, was declared dead at Citrus Valley Medical Center-Queen of the Valley Campus, the West Covina Police Department reported.
According to police, paramedics took Camacho to the hospital this morning from his girlfriend’s West Covina home he experienced difficulty breathing about 4 a.m. The hospital notified police of the death shortly before 7 a.m. The cause of death will have to be determined by an autopsy.
Camacho was considered a pioneer in MMA, having fought professionally for about 15 years. He competed in Long Beach Sunday in a program sponsored by the North American Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation.
According to the company’s website, Camacho began fighting professionally in 1997 and ran the Joe Camacho Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Los Angeles.
