Big Sur fire growth small, 5 percent containment
BIG SUR, Calif. (AP) — Officials say a wildfire in the Big Sur area of California grew only slightly overnight, and crews were able to establish some containment lines around it.
The fire in the Pfeiffer Ridge area of the Los Padres National Forest near state Highway 1 had consumed about 550 acres by Tuesday morning, 50 acres more than the previous night.
Forest service spokeswoman Lynn Olson said it was 5 percent contained. Additional firefighters were brought in overnight, bringing the total force to about 400.
The fire has burned at least 15 homes and forced about 100 people to evacuate since it began around midnight on Sunday.
