SAN DIEGO (AP) — San Diego State University has eliminated the remaining 12 designated smoking areas on campus, adopting a no-tobacco policy.

U-T San Diego reports the university will be smoke-free when students return for the spring semester next month. Workers will remove ashtrays from the last smoking sites and will set up sandwich boards announcing the new rule, which officially takes effect Wednesday.

Smoking will be banned in all buildings and vehicles owned, occupied or leased by San Diego State. Outdoor smoking on campus property, including parking lots, also is prohibited.

SDSU officials say they have created an informational website, smokefree.sdsu.edu, about its new policy.
