Cirque du Soleil to open next week in Santa Monica
SANTA MONICA (CNS) – Cirque du Soleil’s famous blue and yellow big top was unfurled today at the Santa Monica Pier, where performances of the production TOTEM are set to begin next week.
The installation of the trademark big top took place Thursday at the pier, where a team of 60 men and women pounded pegs, unfurled the canvas and pushed more than 100 supporting poles to raise the roof.
Performances of TOTEM will begin Jan. 17 and run through March 16.
TOTEM, written and directed by Robert Lepage, traces the evolution of the human species and its desire to fly. The cast features 46 acrobats, actors, musicians and singers.
The big top seats more than 2,600 people and is 66 feet high. Putting together the entire site takes eight days and includes the installation of entrance and rehearsal tents, administrative offices and a kitchen.
