Oscars salute film heroes
BEVERLY HILLS (CNS) – The upcoming Academy Awards ceremony will include a celebration of big-screen heroes, with tributes to animated and live-action heroes, comic book legends and the filmmakers who brought them to life in movies, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today.
“We wanted to unify the show with an entertaining and emotional theme,” ceremony producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron said in a joint statement. “People around the world go to the movies to be inspired by the characters they see on the screen.
“Be celebrating the gamut of heroes who have enriched our movie-going experience, we hope to create an evening of fun and joy. And that includes the filmmakers and actors who take risks and stimulate us with provocative subjects and daring characters. They are all heroes in the cinematic landscape.”
In conjunction with the theme of the 86th Academy Awards ceremony, the Academy will also present an exhibit at its Beverly Hills headquarters beginning Friday titled “The Oscars Celebrates Movie Heroes,” featuring photos and posters from 70 films over nine decades, along with video montages from various films. The exhibit will include displays from films on real-lie heroes such as “Gandhi” and “Silkwood” to superhero and animated films to action heroes such as “Gladiator” and “Seven Samurai” to literary heroes, such as “To Kill a Mockingbird.”
Oscar nominations will be announced Thursday morning. The Academy Awards ceremony will be held March 2 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
