GOP move to expel senator fails to gain traction
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – A state Senate committee will not consider a Republican resolution seeking to expel a Democrat awaiting sentencing on perjury and voter fraud charges.
Majority Democrats sent the resolution to the Senate Rules Committee two weeks ago after three Republicans tried to bring it up on the Senate floor.
Republican Sen. Steve Knight of Palmdale, a committee member, asked that the resolution be discussed during Wednesday’s committee hearing, but it was not put on the agenda.
Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg says it is being held in committee and that the Senate is “moving on.”
Democratic Sen. Rod Wright took a voluntary leave of absence last month after his conviction for lying about his legal residence in Los Angeles County. Three Republican lawmakers say he should be expelled or suspended.
