LOS ANGELES (CNS) – Above-normal temperatures will create toasty weather today in the Southland, where some valley areas will reach the low 90s.

The normal high in downtown Los Angeles today would be 72 degrees Fahrenheit, but, instead, a high of 85 is expected, said National Weather Service meteorologist Rich Thompson, attributing the heat spike to high pressure over Southern California combined with a weak offshore flow near the surface.

But a cooling trend is expected starting Wednesday, and Thompson said temperatures will be back to normal levels by the weekend.

The NWS forecast highs today of 75 on Mount Wilson; 76 in San Clemente; 77 in Newport Beach; 79 in Laguna Beach and Avalon; 80 at LAX; 83 in Palmdale and Lancaster; 85 in downtown L.A.; 87 in San Gabriel, Long Beach and Anaheim; 88 in Irvine and Mission Viejo; 89 in Burbank and Fullerton; 90 in Yorba Linda and Pasadena; 91 in Saugus; and 92 in Woodland Hills.

While bright sunshine was forecast for today, partly cloudy skies were expected over the coming days, with sunny skies returning Sunday.
