Raids at LA hookah lounges result in citations
LOS ANGELES (AP) – Authorities conducted compliance checks at six Los Angeles hookah lounges, and all were cited for various violations.
City News Service says the establishments in the Van Nuys and Sherman Oaks area were found in violation of the smoking law, which prohibits smoking in outdoor dining areas or areas intended for the consumption of food.
Police officer Brian Frost says other violations include possession of altered alcoholic beverages, allowing smoking inside the workplace and unauthorized possession of distilled spirits.
Frost says hookah lounges are not illegal, but smoking in any establishment where food and alcohol is served violates both state and local laws.
Authorities declined to identify the hookah shops raided because of an ongoing investigation.
The raids were conducted by LAPD vice officers and the City Attorney’s Tobacco Enforcement Unit, along with state agencies.
