Bret Lewis

Bret Lewis is a city boy who grew up in the country and then ended up in the second biggest city in America. His father was a newspaper editor for the Dallas Times Herald. He wanted to buy a farm to retire to.

So at the age of 6, Bret and the family moved to a 70 acre farm in Seagoville, about 30 miles outside of Dallas. In high school he fell in love with football and got a first hand look at how rabid fans are in the Lone Star state when it comes to high school football.

He didn’t quit there but was a “walk on” at the University of Texas, a player on the team without a scholarship but willing to take the pounding in practice every day. It only took him two years of a liberal arts education to realize he had no future doing that.

His other love was performing. So he got a job as an all night disc jockey to start out; did news and weather and finally sports on television. He worked in Dallas for the CBS station. Then on to Miami where he worked four years for the NBC station as lead sports anchor, picking up an Emmy in the process.

He came to Los Angeles in 1988. Where he has worked for both the CBS and NBC affiliates. (Which included a story on bull riding, a contest that was easily won by the bull who kicked Bret in the leg for good measure).

He got back into radio, hosting “Lakers Line” on 570 KLAC (now XTRA), home of the Lakers before coming to KFWB NEWS TALK 980.

Now the morning sports anchor for KFWB whose sports department has won six awards as best in Los Angeles by the Southern California Sportscasters Association. As well as part of the morning team that has won a Golden Mike Award as best in Southern California radio. His sports jokes often appear in the Los Angeles Times’ “Morning Briefing” in the sports section.

He has covered Super Bowls, the World Series, the NBA finals, the Stanley Cup Finals, Kentucky Derby and even the World Cup. His play by play experience includes college football, pro basketball and boxing.

To stay in touch with his roots when he can’t visit the family back in Texas, he tries his hand at country karaoke. And not saying his “Friends in Low Places” rivals Garth but it usually fires up the crowd!

Hello,
I was listening to your station this morning and was greatly displeased when the sports news came on and the wrong name of the player that scored the final goal to win the game for the Kings to move to round 2 in the playoffs was said.
To many hockey is not a big thing in LA but to me it is and to have his name said as Jason Stoll when it is Jarret Stoll is a rather big mistake in my book. Especially for someone who broadcast LA sports news daily.
As to many Kings fans in LA hearing the name being said wrong is about as bad as hearing nails being scratched upon a chalk board. The Kings hardly get the press they deserve because people in LA are always about basketball and baseball so even a name slip up is a big deal.
Thanks for hearing my rant.

    Hi Misty,

A mistake I regret, as I know how big a moment it was for hockey fans in general and Kings fans in particular. Please accept my apology.
