Your mom may have told you that gossiping is a bad habit, but a recent study suggests it may have some benefits.
Robb Willer, assistant professor of sociology and psychology at UC Berkeley, said a series of studies showed that receiving and relaying gossip has positive social effects.

The Los Angeles school police officer that plead guilty to claiming he had been shot last year could be forced to pay up to $300,000 in restitution.
Los Angeles Unified School District police officer Jeffrey Stenroos, 31, was sentenced to five years in prison after he was convicted of staging his own shooting at El Camino Real High School in January 2011. Stenroos’ restitution hearing has been set for Feb. 16, where a judge will decide how much he will have to pay for the stunt.

Author Todd Patkin has written Finding Happiness: One Man’s Quest to Beat Depression and Anxiety and—Finally—Let the Sunshine In, and said kicking the stress from the past can take some work. Patkin outlines simple steps like incorporating exercise into your day and cutting yourself some slack that he said can make a big difference in your mood.

Obesity rates in the U.S. have flattened out in recent years – but a significant number of Americans are still obese.
One in three adults and nearly 17 percent of kids and teens are obese, according to a study from the Centers for Disease Control. The survey also found that 35.5 percent of men and 35.8 percent of women in America were obese, according to data taken from 2009-10. The survey used
KFBW’s Maggie McKay and Michael Shappee spoke with Dr Chris Tolcher, of Agoura West Valley Pediatrics and member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, to find out what the trend means.
The CDC survey measured the height and weight of almost 6,000 men and women and calculated their Body Mass Index to determine obesity.

This message warning users about the Stop Online Piracy Act that Congress is considering appears on the Wikipedia home page. The online encyclopedia site has shut down for the next 24 hours in protest to the proposed legislation. (Image credit: Wikipedia)
Wikipedia was joined by thousands of other websites Wednesday that have gone dark in protest to proposed legislation they say would limit Internet freedom.
The 24-hour protest is in response to a piece of legislation before Congress known as SOPA – the Stop Online Piracy Act. The proposed act would crack down on sites that offer pirated music, movies and other goods.
KFWB’s Maggie McKay spoke with KTLA tech reporter Rich Demuro, who explained what the protest really means.

Getting into shape one of your New Year’s resolutions?
Right about now most people who have committed to whipping themselves into shape and changing their diet are finding it harder and harder stick to their goal.
KFWB’s Maggie McKay spoke to Boot Camp LA instructor Jay “The Major” Kerwin about how to combat the January fitness slump.
Kerwin is a celebrity trainer and fitness competitor who runs the Boot Camp LA program with wife Marcella at George C. Page Museum Park, near the La Brea Tar Pits and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Have you ever told your boss you were late because your cat was hiccupping?
The annual list of the most outrageous excuses for showing up late to work is out thanks to Career Builder. The job site’s senior career advisor Michael Erwin said about 16 percent of workers admit to being late at least once a week, which could lead to problems since about a third of employers reported firing an employee for arriving late.
KFWB’s Maggie McKay spoke with the job site’s senior career advisor Michael Erwin to find out the common and not so common reasons people are late.

Pasadena has devoted this week to celebrate the birth of an American classic – the cheeseburger.
Some of the city’s best restaurants are taking part in the Cheeseburger Challenge by making their signature burgers, part of the ode to cheeseburger week that runs through Friday. The city celebrates what it considers the birth of the sandwich at Rite Spot Cafe on West Colorado Boulevard in the 1920s.
