Today we honor the men and women of our armed forces who have given their lives in the service of our country. There are a number of events you can attend today across the Southland to pay your respects.
Jeanie Bonfilio of the California Department of Veteran Affairs spoke with KFWB’s Penny Griego and Phil Hulett to discuss some of the biggest events taking place today and how returning veterans can make sure to get the benefits they’ve earned.

A partial annular solar eclipse is seen over Beijing, China on May 20, 2012 (AP Photo)
(AP) – From a park near Albuquerque, to the top of Japan’s Mount Fuji, to the California coast the effect was dramatic: The moon nearly blotting out the sun creating a blazing “ring of fire” eclipse.
Millions of people across a narrow strip of eastern Asia and the Western U.S. turned their sights skyward for the annular eclipse, in which the moon passes in front of the sun leaving only a golden ring around its edges.
The rare lunar-solar alignment was visible in Asia early Monday before it moved across the Pacific – and the international dateline – where it was seen in parts of the western United States late Sunday afternoon.
People from Colorado, Oklahoma and as far away as Canada traveled to Albuquerque to enjoy one of the best vantage points at a park on the edge of the city. Members of the crowd smiled and cheered and children yelled with excitement as the moon crossed the sun and the blazing halo of light began to form. Some watched the eclipse by placing their viewing glasses on the front of their smartphones.
Eventually, the moon centered and covered about 96 percent of the sun.
Elsewhere, viewing parties were held at observatories in Reno, Nev., and Oakland, Calif., while skywatchers gathered in coastal and forest counties in California. In some areas, special camera filters for taking photographs have been sold out for weeks in anticipation of the big event.
Yet, while millions were making an effort to view the eclipse, some American Indians were adhering to tradition by staying indoors.
Navajo Bonnie Charley of Monument Valley in northeast Arizona said she follows her tribe’s traditions. “You’re supposed to stay inside,” said the 75-year-old Charley, whose father was a medicine man. “No eating, drinking or sleeping. That’s for the duration of the eclipse.” She said Navajo traditions surrounding eclipses stem from their beliefs regarding creation.
Kings on the brink of Stanley Cup final

(AP) – For a club that barely made the playoffs this spring, the Kings are on a near-unprecedented rampage through the Western Conference’s top seeds. For a franchise that has never raised the Stanley Cup, these Kings appear quite ready to play for that singular privilege.
Anze Kopitar scored the tying breakaway goal, Dwight King added the winner early in the third period, and the Kings rolled to the brink of their first Stanley Cup final in 19 years with a 2-1 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes in Game 3 of the conference finals on Thursday night.
Los Angeles is up 3-0 in the series and could wrap up the franchise’s second trip to the Cup final in Game 4 on Sunday.
Hall of Fame play-by-play announcer for the Kings, Bob Miller, chatted with KFWB’s Penny Griego and Phil Hulett about the Kings.
Unprecedented logistics at Staples Center this weekend

Staples Center is always among the world’s busiest arenas, hosting a jam-packed slate of concerts and shows crammed between games for the NBA’s Lakers and Clippers and the NHL’s Kings.
But the downtown Los Angeles venue is preparing for its craziest weekend ever. After a remarkable run of simultaneous postseason success, Staples Center’s three main tenants are combining to host six playoff games in just four days.
Starting with Game 3 of the Kings’ Western Conference final against the Phoenix Coyotes on Thursday night and concluding with Game 4 of the Clippers’ second-round series against the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday night, the building will host a noon-to-night barrage of dunks and slap shots, 3-pointers and glove saves in a succession of pressure-packed postseason games.
For Lee Zeidman, Staples Center’s senior vice president and general manager, this confluence of playoff success is both a visceral thrill and a puzzle to be solved.
Indeed, it’s difficult enough to clean and prepare 1 million square feet of arena, including 168 luxury suites and 53 concession stands, twice in the same day. But the toughest of Staples Center’s three changeovers is going from hockey to basketball — and that’s not even including the potential of overtime hockey, which can go on indefinitely.
Zeidman spoke with KFWB’s Penny Griego and Phil Hulett about the challenging logistics. Click the play button to listen.
